Hi, this is Izumitani from the Ehime Film Commission (Ehime FC)!
I recently attended the National Location Fair 2023 Winter, where 79 film commissions (FCs) from across Japan—from Hokkaido to Ishigaki Island in Okinawa—gathered for this special event.
What is the National Location Fair?
This event, which started over 20 years ago, serves as a matching opportunity between film commissions and production professionals.
For film commissions, it’s a rare chance to meet many filmmakers and producers in one place, while for creators, it’s an opportunity to gather information on potential filming locations nationwide—all in just one day.
Because of its success and strong results, the event has been held twice a year (summer and winter) since two years ago.
Finding the Right Venue is a Challenge!
As the number of participating FCs grows, finding a venue that can accommodate everyone has become quite difficult. In the past, we used locations such as Toho Gekijo Building, Jiji Press Hall, and the Kotsu Kaikan, but none were large enough.
This time, the event was held on the 23rd floor of the Mynavi Place Kabukiza Tower, a high-rise behind the famous Kabukiza Theater. One of the organizers proudly mentioned, “This is the largest event space in Ginza!”—and they were right! The space was new, spacious, and had an incredible view, making it a fantastic setting for both FC representatives and industry professionals.
A Buzzing Atmosphere with Over 220 Industry Professionals
Perhaps because of the venue’s appeal (or just the power of the event itself!), over 220 producers, directors, and production staff attended over five hours.
The venue was filled with discussions, meetings, and networking, creating a lively and energetic atmosphere.
Thinking about how ideas, projects, location scouting, and even filming plans were being developed and decided right there made me realize just how impactful this fair truly is!
Ehime FC’s Presence at the Event
Along with me, Ms. Suga from Ehime FC also participated, setting up a wonderful PR booth to showcase Ehime as a filming destination. She even wore a knit cap featuring the new drama Konna Tokoro de Uragiri Meshi, which started airing on January 18. It’s set to broadcast on Nankai Broadcasting on January 27.
We also displayed posters and past filming achievements, highlighting the growing potential of Ehime as a filming location.
Strengthening the National Filming Support Network
Beyond connecting with filmmakers and producers, this event also serves another crucial purpose—helping FC representatives from across Japan build relationships with each other.
By forming a strong nationwide filming support network, film commissions can collaborate effectively, ensuring Japan remains a prime destination for film productions.
Every time I attend, I’m reminded of how essential this network is and how our collective strength makes filming in Japan possible.
Looking forward to seeing how these connections lead to new filming opportunities in Ehime and beyond! 🎬✨
